AI Elements is a free online course created by the University of Helsinki and technology company Reaktor. It addresses real-world issues through examples: how artificial intelligence manages to play a game of chess, determine which email is spam,  or recognize objects in photos.

Understanding how AI affects our society is the best reason to enroll in the course, which, in addition to being free, is open to everyone and available in the 24 official languages ​​of the European Union. The goal of the course is to clarify Artificial Intelligence (AI). It provides a basic introduction to everyone interested in learning what AI is. What is possible (and not possible) to do with AI, and how does it affect our lives? After the course, you will be able to define and discuss AI and be critical of claims related to AI. Explain underlying technologies such as machine learning and neural networks, and understand the main implications of AI.

What is the objective of the course, and what will I learn?

The objective of the course is that all citizens can obtain essential knowledge about this type of technology. This offers excellent opportunities to improve the economy and our lives so that the entire population can actively participate in its development and make informed decisions.

The purpose of ‘Elements of AI’ is to demystify and make new AI technologies more accessible to the general population so that we can all understand them.

In it, you will learn to define AI, obtain essential knowledge about its basic foundations, and understand some of its significant repercussions to think and reflect critically on news and statements about these technologies.

‘AI Elements’ Course

The course comprises six modules in which you can access definitions and basic knowledge of different aspects of AI and its social implications. You will do it through interactive exercises with questions about the impact of AI in everyday situations and problem-solving activities that will give you the tools to make informed decisions about this type of technology.

It estimates that to complete the course. You will need between 30 and 60 hours: 5 to 10 hours for each module. The system does not have a grade, but the number of exercises completed is record. To obtain the certificate, you must complete at least 90% of the activities and answer 50% of them correctly.

Do I need to have any previous training to take ‘Elements of IA’?

The course does not require programming skills, although it requires some basic mathematics knowledge. So people with previous technical skills in this subject may progress faster. However, all the information necessary to complete the exercises is available in the course.

About the free online course Elements of AI

The Finnish government launched the course in 2018 in the framework of the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The University of Helsinki, in collaboration with the company Reaktor, was in charge of designing the course. AI Elements translate and extend to all EU Member States, including Spain, thanks to the support of the European Commission.

Since its launch, more than 650,000 people from more than 170 countries have studied AI elements. So among the population participating in the course, around 40% are women, and 25% are over 45. These data show the project’s great potential in digital closing gaps. One of the main objectives of Spain is for a recovery based on transversal and inclusive digitization.
